Over 80% of Malawians rely on agriculture for their livelihood, yet issues such as frequent droughts, erratic rainfall and soil degradation have a detrimental impact on productivity. For example, climate variability has resulted in inconsistent crop yields, affecting food security and income for farming communities. According to the National Agricultural Policy (NAP), addressing these challenges requires the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and climate-smart techniques to enhance resilience and productivity.

The engagement of youth in agriculture is crucial for the sector's future sustainability. Youth are often enthusiastic about modernizing agricultural practices. The Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) highlights the importance of involving young people in agriculture to drive growth and innovation. POP’s focus on integrating youth into agricultural development aligns with national strategies and international frameworks such as the UN Food Systems Summit, which advocates for a sustainable food system driven by active and diverse stakeholders.
